Norplex-Micarta standard and custom products are used in many military and aerospace applications that require product performance, affordability, confidentiality, and high reliability. Combining the structural support of the base substrate with a thermoset resin system, the products are designed to offer mechanical strength and ballistic- or puncture-resistant properties.

In military ground vehicles and installations, Norplex-Micarta panels and pre-pregs provide protection against small arms fire, blasts, and fragmentation. Though they weigh and cost less than alternative materials, thermoset composites can withstand the intense heat generated by high-velocity projectiles. Norplex-Micarta products also offer ease of handling, which can result in substantial savings in mold-charging operations without sacrificing performance.

In commercial airplanes, Norplex-Micarta sheets are used to provide thermal insulation for disk brakes. Compressive strength is also required during installation, and repair/inspection, when the disk brake and wheel are bolted together. Tube grades are ideal for thermal insulators between the tire and shaft.

Thermal insulation properties are also critical for the window frame supports in commercial aircraft. Because the coefficient of thermal expansion of Norplex-Micarta materials is similar to that of both the window glass and aluminum skeleton of the aircraft, the materials expand and contract at approximately the same rate.

Moldable into complex profiles, Norplex-Micarta large-format pre-pregs can replace wet lay-up unsaturated polyesters and sheet-molding compounds. Norplex-Micarta pre-preg exceeds all structural and toxicity requirements for skins in aircraft cargo liners.

Armor steel and ballistic ceramics have been molded into Norplex-Micarta ballistic product line for applications requiring protection against high-caliber weapons. For enhanced performance, specialized materials such as Kevlar™ can be incorporated into the core, or Spectra™ can be added to the surfaces of these composites.
